4 out of 5 stars Great picture/functions, terrible "buttons"   April 8, 2010

I've had this monitor for just under 6 months now. The size is great for 1080p, anything smaller on the diagonal and the dot pitch would be too small for me to view comfortably without leaning in (I wear contacts usually, glasses occasionally, basic nearsightedness @ -2.00, nothing special). Note that 1080p is 1920x1080. Some tags associated with this listing incorrectly say 1920x1200. The viewing angle is pretty good and the sweet spot zone is large enough that sitting a little off-center isn't bothersome, but the tilt adjustment of forward/backward is really only backward. My desk is built for computers, and the monitor stand is built-in and slightly high, so I have to sit up pretty straight or I'll start to notice it if I've slumped enough. My previous monitor would tilt forward a couple degrees, this one not at all.

The image on the monitor is nice and crisp, good contrast and saturation. I'm plenty happy with the quality of photos, video, and artwork displayed on this unit. It handles resolution changes really well considering it's an LCD and not a CRT (my previous monitor type). Note that this is a high-res unit, so built-in graphics on your motherboard will work fine, but video and animation and games may cause stuttering or slowness if you don't dial back the resolution.

I recommend using an add-in graphics card with 512MB memory minimum. For ATI a 5450 GPU minimum, about $50-60, which should give you great video and light gaming capability, though a 5670 or higher is recommended if you do more gaming, which runs about $90-100. If you're serious about trying games on this monitor, go for a 5770 ($150), or if your case/power will accommodate, a 5830 or 5850 (both over $200) will play games very well. On the NVidia side, a GeForce GT 240 at about $70-80 is a good starting point, or a 9600/9800 GT, or even a GTS 250 works, too, for just a little more. A jump to the GTX 240/260 range puts you over $200 and should do games well, but again you need to consider case size and power. [...] are all reasonable review sites where you can get all the gory details, though I like [...] best and it's daily "Shortbread" section always links you to everyone else's reviews, so it's a good starting point.

My one beef with the design of the 2494HM is the "buttons". They're essentially touch-sensitive spots on the bezel, so you can't feel them. If it's dark enough, you can't see them, either. By default the input select was on auto, and every time I booted my computer it would cycle through the settings. I eventually figured out what the setting was that would "lock" it onto my DVI connection, but it drove me nuts before that, because I'd have to figure out exactly where the invisible "button" was in order to switch inputs if it got it wrong. I still like to tweak settings now and then, and the lack of real buttons makes it difficult.

For the price I paid, overall I'm happy. I would have liked to have been very happy, but I'll settle for happy any day. This monitor should be on your short list if you are looking for this size/resolution and it's in your price range, and you don't think you'll be adjusting settings a lot.

Note: there are two different entries in Amazon's listings for the 2494HM if you do a search, and Amazon sells on both of them, for different prices. In other words, it's not a stray listing for a non-Amazon merchant. They were added at different times, one in 2008 and the other in 2009. I don't see anything to indicate they are different in any way, so I suggest going for the cheaper of the two.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good... except...   August 18, 2009

The Bad:

1. The soft-touch menu "buttons" are a pain. They activate when you lightly brush up against them (e.g. while reaching to adjust a speaker next to the screen). Also the labeling of the buttons is unreadable unless the lighting in the room is just right (dark gray ink on black plastic)... for a product that is measured by "contrast ratios", how did they ever get this wrong?!

2. Although the horizontal viewing angle is wide, the vertical is very tight. Since the screen is relatively big when you sit two feet from it, you can actually notice the difference in color/brightness in different regions when you move your head up or down a few inches. It is most noticeable when viewing pictures; not so much when dealing with text.

3. They take several seconds to wake up from sleep mode (Mac only?). Maybe 4 or 5 seconds. Not terribly annoying, unless you're in a hurry.

The Good: (Not including the obvious things everyone likes)

1. I really like the ability to swivel the screen 90-degrees, to make it tall rather than wide. On my Mac, this is handled seamlessly. Since I have two of these monitors, I have one set up vertically, which is great for editing text docs, or for positioning long toolbars/inspectors when working on the horizontal screen. Also great when viewing a portrait picture, vs. a landscape. You can view the picture without any lost real estate.

Overall: I think I got a good deal for my purposes (computer programming and some graphics/web design)

5 out of 5 stars No dead pixels!   August 7, 2009

No dead pixels, thank you Amazon! The colors no are the best (normal in TN panels), but very fast for games! I am happy with Samsung.

4 out of 5 stars NICE MONITOR   May 5, 2009

I took a lot of time to research a good all purpose monitor and found this was a good bang for the buck..nice pix, no dead pixels and very versatile in horizontal and vertical positions... ive read a lot of people complain about the touch controls.. get over it already, this has not been a problem whatsoever. if youre looking for them in pitch black then yes , its an issue.....yes its tn, probably not as good as an apple but not as expensive either, still a nice picture and good for all overall use.. horizontal viewing angle ok. about the same as all monitors in its class..price- well i dont think its worth over 410 or 420, its been out for a while and if you pick it up for 400 or less youre getting a deal..i would buy another and probably will if they go below 400...hope this is helpfull

5 out of 5 stars This is one amazing monitor!   April 6, 2009

I just bought a new gaming PC and wanted the right monitor to complement the system. I was happy with 20" Apple Cinema display, but wanted something bigger. After doing some research, I came across this particular monitor.

I was comparing this monitor with Samsung's 245T and was surprised to find out that this monitor outperformed the 245T and was roughly half the price. I use this monitor for gaming only and so far it's amazing.

I ran into some stuck pixel problems with my cinema display when I first bought it and was worried that I might face the same issues with the Samsung. Well, let me tell you that this screen is flawless; it is brighter and more vivid than my cinema display.

I also feared that this monitor would feel a bit cheap. This is simply not the case. The monitor is sturdy and well made. I literally sat in awe when I set up the screen for the first time. I still can't believe how incredible this screen is. I am very picky when it comes to image quality and I must say, I would recommend this screen to any gamer out there.
